The opportunities are endless. With 2 reservoirs within a half mile walk and thousands of acres of heathland and woodland on the commons at your doorstep, with fantastic views over the coastline, you will have all the walking and biking you need for a relaxing occasional walking holiday – or a full on hiking or biking holiday. There is also Haldon Hill’s extensive mountain bike trails within a half hour drive.
Golf
There are 2 golf courses within 3 miles of the cottages – the first is East Devon Golf Course situated in a wonderful location overlooking the coastline Budleigh Salterton to Exmouth and the second is Woodbury Park on the edge of Woodbury Common. Woodbury Park also has swimming, gym facilities etc.
Watersports
Exmouth is famed for its sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing with tuition available for all. There is a watersports centre for fun activities such as water skiing and wake boarding on the Estuary at Exmouth. Canoe hire and tuition is available at Exeter’s Quay side.
Swimming pools
There are indoor swimming pools at Ladram Bay, Otterton, Exmouth and Sidmouth among others.
Fishing
Coarse fishing is available on Squabmoor reservoir just a 10–20 minute walk away across the common or a less than 5 minute drive. A temporary permit is required and available from Budleigh Salterton Tourist Office or Post Office at the back of the Co-op. River fishing is available on the river Otter and deep sea fishing at Exmouth and Beer.
Bird watching
The area is renowned for its birdlife including more rare species right on the doorstep on the on the heathland such as Dartford Warbler and Night Jar as well as more common birdlife such as hundreds of Avocets wintering near the Exe Estuary, and flocks of ducks and waders - The heathland area surrounding the cottages is managed jointly by the RSPB as a special conservation site.
Adventure parks
Many to choose from – Bicton Botanical Gardens (3 miles) has beautiful gardens as well as extensive play facilities for children.
Crealy adventure park – (9 miles) – a substantial adventure park with everything from farm animals to fair ground rides and themed days.
World of Country Life – (3 miles) great for little ones – animals and farm life.
Many more to choose from all over East Devon.
Other adventures within half an hour drive
Indoor climbing is available at Clip and Climb based at the Quay side in Exeter with both fun and professional climbing walls. Haldon is also host to a Go Ape climbing centre Ashcombe forest near Haldon also has full adventure facilities including quad biking, clay shooting, paintball and many others.
National Trust properties
Again many to choose from within a 40 minute drive including Killerton House, Knightshayes, Castle Drogo, A La Ronde plus many more within easy driving reach.
Relaxation and pampering
For relaxation and pampering there is the local Woodbury Park (approx 2 miles) with indoor swimming pool, gym, restaurant and all spa treatments. There are also numerous places in Budleigh, Exmouth and Sidmouthto be pampered.
